Asian Games 2026: Which Indian Athletes and Teams Have Qualified for LA 2028 Olympics? Full List
Both hockey teams, a teenage recurve archer and a compound mixed pair have booked places. Many medal winners have not.
At a glance
- India won four LA 2028 quotas at the Asian Games: men's hockey, women's hockey, women's individual recurve archery and compound mixed team archery.
- The women's cricket team is also qualified, but through the Women's T20 World Cup, not the Asian Games.
- The men's cricket team has not qualified yet. Its route runs through ICC rankings on 31 December 2026.
- An Asian Games medal is not an Olympic ticket. Neeraj Chopra, Manu Bhaker, PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain, Aman Sehrawat and Mirabai Chanu still have to qualify.
The 20th Asian Games were held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026. India finished fourth with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. That is short of the Hangzhou 2023 record but still one of India's strongest Asian Games campaigns.
The Games mattered for Los Angeles 2028, but only in a few sports. Up to 20 quota places across archery, hockey, sailing, squash, surfing, tennis and triathlon were linked to the Asian Games, and not all are confirmed immediately. Boxing, wrestling, shooting and athletics offered no direct places.
India's LA 2028 qualification after Asian Games 2026
These are the confirmed Asian Games quotas. Quotas belong to the country, so the Indian Olympic Association has the final say on which athletes fill them.
| No. | Sport | Event | Indian athlete/team | How it was secured |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hockey | Men's | India men's team | Won Asian Games gold, which carries a direct Olympic berth |
| 2 | Hockey | Women's | India women's team | Beat China 1–0 in the final on 2 October |
| 3 | Archery | Women's individual recurve | Quota earned by Kumkum Mohod | Won individual gold on 3 October |
| 4 | Archery | Compound mixed team | Chikitha Taniparthi, Sahil Jadhav | Won gold in a shoot-off on 30 September |
Hockey was the only team sport offering Asian Games quotas, and each gold medallist, men and women, earns a direct berth. The Asian Games is one route among several. Other nations can still qualify via the FIH Pro League, the Pan American Games, an African qualifier and Olympic qualifiers in March 2028.
Men: back-to-back gold
India retained the title, winning the men's event at consecutive editions for the first time. They edged Pakistan 4–3 in the semi-final and beat Malaysia in the final.
Women: a 44-year wait ends
The women beat defending champions China 1–0 at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara. Lalremsiami Hmarzote scored the only goal, and Savita Punia's penalty-stroke save helped protect the lead. It was India's first women's hockey gold at the Asian Games since 1982, and it comes after the team missed Paris 2024.
It was also the first time both Indian hockey teams won gold at the same Asian Games.
Indian archers qualified for LA 2028
World Archery awards places to countries. The medal and the quota are linked, but the final Olympic team is picked later.
Kumkum Mohod: women's individual recurve
- Result: Gold. The 17-year-old was 10th in the ranking round, beat reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung in the quarter-final and China's Zhu Jingyi 6–2 in the semi-final. She won the final against South Korea's Yejin Oh in a shoot-off, hitting a 10 against Oh's 8.
- Other medals: Gold in the women's recurve team and silver in the mixed recurve team.
- Route: The individual title earned India a women's individual recurve quota.
- What it means: India has one such place at LA 2028, and Kumkum is the leading candidate to fill it. That is not yet an official selection.
Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav: compound mixed team
- Result: Gold, beating South Korea 20–19 in a shoot-off after the match finished level at 157–157.
- Route: Compound archery makes its Olympic debut in LA, and this pair secured the first quota places in the event.
- What it means: India holds a compound mixed team place. India's other compound golds, in the men's and women's team events, carried no quotas.
India won both Asian Games cricket golds. The women beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs, and the men beat Pakistan by 19 runs. Neither result counts toward Olympic qualification. LA 2028 has six teams in each of the men's and women's tournaments, from 14 to 29 July 2028.
| Team | Status | Route |
|---|---|---|
| India women | Qualified | Highest-placed Asian side at the Women's T20 World Cup, England, June 2026 |
| India men | Route pending | Must be Asia's highest-ranked eligible team in the ICC Men's T20I rankings on 31 December 2026; fallback is the ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027 |
Squash, tennis, surfing and other sports
India did not win a quota in any of the other Asian Games-linked sports.
| Sport | Rule | India's outcome | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squash | Men's and women's singles champions earn quotas | Malaysia's Ng Eain Yow and Sivasangari Subramaniam won (subject to PSA top 50 on 22 May 2028) | Not via Asian Games |
| Tennis | Singles champions earn quotas, subject to a top-500 ranking | Sumit Nagal, India's only singles entrant, lost the quarter-final to China's Wu Yibing 4–6, 4–6 | Not via Asian Games |
| Sailing | Men's and women's dinghy winners earn quotas | South Korea's Ha Jeemin and Thailand's Sophia Montgomery won; Nethra Kumanan took bronze. Three more Asian places per class go to later events | Pending |
| Surfing | Top shortboard surfers earn quotas | No Indian quota reported | Not via Asian Games |
| Triathlon | Quota on offer | No Indian entrants | Not applicable |

Who has not qualified yet?
Winning a medal in Japan did not guarantee a place in Los Angeles. Reporting shows none of the athletes below holding an LA 2028 quota.
| Athlete | Asian Games 2026 | LA 2028 |
|---|---|---|
| Neeraj Chopra | Withdrew with injury | Not qualified |
| Manu Bhaker | No medal in four events | Not qualified |
| PV Sindhu | Lost the singles quarter-final to Chen Yufei | Not qualified |
| Lovlina Borgohain | Gold, women's 75kg | Not qualified |
| Aman Sehrawat | Gold, men's 57kg freestyle | Not qualified |

They, and every other medal winner, must still earn places through their own sport's system. Boxing was not an Asian Games quota event this time.
India's road to LA 2028
- Cricket: The men's ICC ranking window closes on 31 December 2026, with the Olympic Qualifier in 2027.
- Shooting: 340 quota places are available through international events.
- Sailing: Three more Asian places per dinghy class are still to be awarded.
- Other sports: Athletics, boxing, wrestling and badminton generally use world championships, rankings and continental or global qualifiers. Each federation publishes its own system.
The IOA selects the final squad, so names will keep emerging well into 2028.
Why Asian Games 2026 mattered for India
- Team sports: India swept men's and women's cricket, hockey and kabaddi.
- Archery: Kumkum Mohod became the first Indian woman to win Asian Games individual recurve gold, and compound archers swept all three team titles.
- Combat sports: Boxing produced three golds and wrestling six medals, including golds for Aman Sehrawat and Sujeet Kalkal.
- Shooting and athletics: Neeru Dhanda won two golds and a silver, but the sport otherwise dipped. Athletics supplied 24 medals with only one gold.
Four quotas won early take pressure off the hockey and archery programmes with more than 21 months to go.
